How to use our Living Soil

Water it

Watering our Living Soil is the biggest thing to do. We tried to make a soil that does all the work for you.

We recommend a minimum of one cubic foot (7.5 gallons) per cannabis plant (my preference has been 20-25 gallons per plant with 2 months of vegging). When I have the space, I use 50 gallons for outdoors, but the additional 25 gallons are a mix of normal compost and leaf mold compost.

You want to keep the soil moist, but not wet throughout the entire grow cycle. You do not need dry out periods. If you grab a handful of soil and squeeze, a little bit of water should drip out, not a ton, and it shouldn’t feel dry either. When using a moisture meter, aim for 80-120 mbar.

Mulching is important, whether you use cardboard scraps, hay, or mulch. As long as the top layer of soil has some protection to stay moist, you’re in the clear.

The main thing you have to worry about is keeping bugs off. For bugs, mold, and other problems, I prefer to make my own sprays. When it comes to off the shelf solutions, I recommend lost coast for basic ipm, and mixing neem or karanja oil in for a more serious infestation.

This soil is reusable!

By adding small amounts of amendments (or compost) between plants, this soil can be used indefinitely. This can really help on the long term costs so that you can save more money harvest after harvest.

Keep in mind this is a living soil, so you may find insects or tiny organisms inside — that’s a good thing! A healthy soil food web is key for a true organic growing. If your curious if a bug is beneficial or not, you can use Picture this bug identifier on your phone to help identify them.
